Bulletin #23-11

February 16, 2012

CATHOLIC EDUCATORS’ CONFERENCE:

The CISVA will be holding its 33rd Annual Educators’ Conference tomorrow, Thursday, February 16th and Friday, February 17th.   Please note that there will be no school, as teachers and educational assistants will be attending various professional development opportunities on these days.  We thank you for your continued support of our many endeavours as we work in partnership to help promote the children’s spiritual, social, emotional and intellectual growth.  Wishing you and your families an enjoyable long weekend. School will reopen on Monday, February 20th.

TUITION TAX RECEIPTS AND RUN-A-THON RECEIPTS:

Please pick up your 2011 Income Tax Receipts for the religious education component of your tuition paid during the 2011 tax year, as well  as run-a-thon receipts from the school office. As you are aware, every year our school system issues Income Tax Receipts to parents/guardians or other individuals who have paid for a student's tuition. You should include this amount in the Charitable Donations section of your income tax return.

The Income Tax Act allows tax savings of 20% on the first $200 of donations, and 43.7% on donations exceeding $200.  For most parents, this means that you will receive a benefit of 43.7% of the value of your tuition. This is a direct tax savings, regardless of your income bracket and it therefore has a significant effect on reducing the actual amount of tuition you paid through the past year.

NEW WATER FOUNTAINS

Two new stainless steel water fountains, which dispense chilled water, have been installed in the boys’ and girls’ change rooms in the gym. Thank you to the Graduating Class of 2011 for this “legacy gift” to the school.

TRAFFIC SAFETY/PARKING/SUPERVISION:

It is imperative that traffic and supervision guidelines are followed consistently and that patience is exercised at all times.  We are still having many cars drive quickly and stop or park illegally, which in turn causes congestion in the parking lot and an unsafe area for our students.  Please park only in the designated parking spots. Thank you to all of our parents and grandparents who generously volunteer their time to assist with traffic and supervision. Your service is greatly appreciated.

VALENTINE SPIRIT DAY!

Student Council would like to thank all who participated in our “Valentine Spirit Day”.  On behalf of the Leadership Team thank you for purchasing Candy grams this year and supporting our fundraising efforts.

ST. PIUS X ANNUAL VARIETY SHOW:

Our annual Variety Show, which featured the many talented and creative students at St. Pius X, was a huge success.  Thank you to all who shared their talents and to Madame Byrne who coordinated the show. Well done! Over $450.00 was raised for our school.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE?

Dance is coming to St. Pius X during the month of February and all students will be able to participate in this amazing program!  Thanks to our Parent Support Group, we are able to offer dance for our students. Dance classes will begin on Monday, February 20th.

SHROVE TUESDAY:

Tuesday, February 21st is Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday.  This is the last day before the long fast for Lent.  To mark this occasion, the school will be providing a pancake snack for all students.  A big thank you to the Valk family and our parent volunteers for coordinating this annual event. Please ensure that your child has returned his/her pancake order form to the school.

ASH WEDNESDAY:

Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, the season of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.  Ash Wednesday always falls 46 days before Easter. While Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, all Roman Catholics are encouraged to attend Mass on this day in order to mark the beginning of the Lenten season.  Please join us for Ash Wednesday Mass on Wednesday, February 22nd at 9:15 am.  All are invited to attend this mass, which will be hosted by our Grade 7 class.

We are asking for a $5.00 donation from each family to help cover the cost and show gratitude and appreciation for our staff. Please send this with your eldest child. Donations of red and white wine would also be greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the school office.

WEAR PINK/BE A FRIEND DAY!

Student Council is proud to present Pink Shirt/Be a Friend Day!  On Wednesday, February 29th, all students and staff are encouraged to wear something pink and promote friendship. Schools play an important role in helping our youth develop positive social behaviours – by setting expectations for appropriate behaviour and by teaching and modeling healthy relationship skills. Be a friend and not a bully…our goal is to help make our school as safe and caring as possible. If you wish to participate in this non-uniform day, and enter into our lucky prize draw, please bring in $2.  All proceeds will be donated to “Free the Children”. Thank you for your spirit, friendship and generosity.
