PRIMARY SPEECH ARTS:  

 The North Shore Schools’ Primary Speech Arts Festival is progressing well and all our students have done an excellent job so far. Tomorrow will be the last day of the festival. Please note the following reminders:

•  Parents are asked to arrive 15 minutes ahead of their child’s session, in order to avoid disappointment if the adjudicators are ahead of schedule.  

• Children are to be in full school uniform (including polished shoes and hair accessories in school colours) for their presentation.  

•  Audience members are asked to bring in a non-perishable food item, which will be donated to the local food bank.   Thank you for your support!

STA VISIT AND OPEN HOUSE:

On Tuesday, Mr. Frank Dragojevic, Principal from St. Thomas Aquinas and two STA students (St. Pius X alumni) visited our school and met with the Grade 6 and 7 classes.  It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn a little more about the faith and learning community at St Thomas Aquinas, our regional high school.  Please note the following dates and important information:

• STA Open House: Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

• STA Placement Exam: Monday, February 13th, 2012

 

READY, SET, LEARN MEETING TONIGHT:

We will be hosting an evening session for prospective new families and returning families wishing to enroll their children in Kindergarten at St. Pius X tonight, Thursday, January 26th at 6:30 pm. This session will give parents a snapshot of our Kindergarten program and provide ways parents can assist in helping their child get ready for Kindergarten. 

KINDERGARTEN SEPTEMBER 2012:

Kindergarten applications will be accepted until January 31st and interviews for prospective new families will occur February 1st to February 3rd inclusive.  If you know of a family who is interested in enrolling their child for Kindergarten at St. Pius X for September 2012, please have them contact the school office at 604.929.0345.  Children must turn five years of age by December 31st, 2012.   Families who are already in our school must ensure that the names of younger siblings are on our waiting list.  St. Pius X will continue to offer a half day program for the 2012-2013 school year.

EMAIL ADDRESS UPDATE:

A form was sent home this week asking each family for their email address. These forms need to be returned to the school office by Friday, January 27th to prepare for our on-line registration system. If you did not receive a form please contact the school office at 604.929.0345.  Thank you for your cooperation. 

VARIETY CLUB GOLD HEARTS:

We are still selling Variety Club gold heart pins in the Office for a cost of $3 per pin.  All proceeds from the sales will be donated to the Variety Club Children’s Charity.  On Saturday, January 28th, 2012 our Grade 7 Student Council members will present a donation on behalf of our school as well as several other Catholic schools in the Archdiocese; this presentation will be aired during the Variety Club telethon in February.  Our Grade 7 presenters are asked to meet at the school at 11:00 am on Saturday wearing their full school uniform.  Thank you for your generosity and for supporting Variety Club!

VARIETY SHOW AUDITIONS:

 The auditions for the annual St. Pius X Variety Show will be held on Monday, January 30th at 7:45 a.m. and Tuesday, January 31st at lunch in the gym. It is the student's responsibility to arrive prepared and on time for their audition. Auditions are closed to parents and siblings. The Variety Show itself will be held on Wednesday, February 15th at 1:00 p.m.  We hope to see you there!

SPRING SOCIAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE:

Thank you to all who volunteered to be a part of our Spring Social Organizing Committee.  We will have our first meeting on Monday, January 30th at 7:00 pm in the school library.  The St. Pius X Spring Social which will be held on Friday, April 27th promises to be an exciting evening with great food, prizes, auction items and dancing. We hope all families will support our Spring fundraiser.  All proceeds from the Spring Social will directly benefit the children of St. Pius X School.

SPX BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS PRIZES NEEDED:

If you are able to contribute any prizes for our annual Grade 7 basketball tournaments on February 1st and February 2nd, please send them to the office by Tuesday, January 31st.  Thank you in advance for your generosity and support of our school. There will be a concession stand at the tournaments, which will be run through our Grade 7 parent group.  All proceeds from the concession stand will go towards the Grade 7 Graduation program.

HONOURNING OUR GRANDPARENTS:

Our annual Mass and reception honouring our grandparents will be held on Friday, February 3rd, 2012.  Mass will begin at 9:15 am and grandparents are asked to meet their grandchildren on the steps of the church before going into the church to be seated. Unfortunately, students who are singing in the Mass choir will not be able to sit with their grandparents.  The center pews are reserved for regular classes with students whose grandparents are not in attendance.  Refreshments for grandparents will be served in the school gymnasium following the Mass.  Children whose grandparents will be in attendance should bring a game, cards or activity to share during the reception. 

KINDERGARTEN SWITCH:

Morning and afternoon Kindergarten classes will switch on Tuesday, February 7th.  The morning class time is from 8:50 -11:30 am and the afternoon class time is from 12:30 -3:00 pm.

“H2O WOAH” IS COMING TO SPX!:

On Wednesday, February 8th, at 9:00 am, Dream Rider Theatre (Greater Vancouver’s Environmental Education Theatre Company) will be presenting a play about the environment. It promises to be asensational show with a very important message about water conservation. The show is approximately 45 minutes in length and will be held in the school gym. All are invited to attend.

PSC MEETING:

The next P.S.C. Meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 8th at 9:15 a.m.

in the music room. All are welcome.

FIRST CONFESSION MEETING:

There will be a meeting for parents of children receiving First Confession and First Communion on Thursday, February 9th at 7:00 p.m. in the church. Please note this is the correct date as there was an error in last week's bulletin.

GRADE 2 FIELD TRIP REMINDER:

Grade 2 parents are reminded that students and parent drivers need to be at school by 8:30 a.m. on Friday, February 10th in order to leave for the field trip to Dr. Sun Yat Sen Gardens.  

READERS ARE LEADERS:

The next deadline for "Readers are Leaders" to have their books and question sheets finished is Monday, February 20th.

BRAIN BOOSTING SECRETS:

Holy Trinity School will be hosting a presentation by Terry Small, a learning skills specialist, on Monday, February 27th at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $7 per person or $10 per couple. Please contact Margot at 604.984.7813 for more information.

MISSING SWEATER:

Maxwell Knight in grade 1 has lost his school sweater. It is labeled on the inside of the front  crest . If found please return it to the grade 1 classroom.
